Resources to understand programming DMR channels for my TYT MD9600 radio are not all that great, at least as far as I have been able to find. I decided to see what ChatGPT could do for one of my local repeaters, VE7MIR.
I gave it the details from the Mid Island Radio Association's website and asked it for what I needed to put in the blanks. It responded with minimal settings in text form. As I tried to refine the fields and asked for an image it tried but was not able to produce anything recognizable despite the fact that I had provided the version number of the programming software.
It finally asked me to upload a screenshot of the channel information window, which I did. Here is the result:
The bonus of the exercise was that I could ask questions about each individual setting as I progressed and receive an explanation and recommendation for what to choose.
I learned from the exercise as there were some settings like the Tx and Rx reference frequencies that I left as a default as I did not know why I should make any changes.
I tried to make a contact through the repeater but was not successful. My first thought was that I was unable to reach it due to my location. It is also possible that no one was listening at the time either. DMR is not a common choice for communication among hams in my area yet.
Hopefully ChatGPT advised me correctly and if not I will be back to edit this article.
